School Rules & District Information

  • Be coureous and respectful of others. Respect from others must be earned. By demonstrating a respectful attitude at all times you will find others treat you the same in return. Consistently use respectful words such as “please, thank you, excuse me, and you’re welcome”.
  • Always tell the truth. When you form the habit of always telling the truth, you will find you behave in such a way that telling the truth is easy.
Dress Code

Dress Code

According to Board Policy 5132, the Board expects students to give proper attention to personal cleanliness and to wear clothes that are suitable for the school activities in which they participate.  Students’ clothing must not present a health or safety hazard or a distraction, which would interfere with the educational process.

The purpose of a schoolwide dress code is to establish a school environment that supports a productive work atmosphere, students’ learning, and reflects the values of our greater school community.  Please take time to review our school’s Dress Code with your child(ren).

The following items of clothing/accessories are considered inappropriate and/or disruptive to the educational process and are therefore NOT allowed:

Clothing, jewelry and/or personal items with writing, pictures or any other insignia which are crude, vulgar, profane or sexually suggestive, which bear drug, alcohol or tobacco company advertising, promotions and likenesses, or which advocate racial, ethnic or religious prejudice

Any attire which exposes the midriff

Shirts or shorts where undergarments are visible

Skirts, shorts, and dresses that are shorter than mid-thigh

Clothing and/or accessories that are distracting to the learning process

Flip-flops, sandals without a back-strap, and shoes with wheels

To participate in sports and recess activities, footwear that provides adequate protection should be worn.  Tennis shoes or sneakers are strongly recommended – they keep children’s feet safest from cuts, scrapes, and bee stings.

Students wearing clothing that does not follow our dress code policy may be asked to go to the office, call their parents, and have alternate clothing brought from home. Thank you, in advance, for your support and cooperation with our school dress code policy.

District Visitation Policy
The safety of all children is of paramount importance. All visitors, including volunteers, are required to register with the School Office and obtain a badge. Visitors may be accompanied by school officials while on campus, and may be denied permission to enter classrooms when in session. Visitors may be asked to leave the premises if school officials determine there is a substantial likelihood of interference disrupting the school programs.

Early Dismissal
Students who are checked out early for medical appointments or other important reasons, should be signed out through the School Office by a parent or guardian. Please send a note to inform the teacher your student will be dismissed early. We do not release students to anyone not listed on the registration card, so please make sure your card is complete with the names of those you might call on in an emergency. Please make sure the office has your current daytime phone, including cell phone number, in case of an emergency.

General School Procedures
  • Discretion and common sense should be used when students dress for school each day. With the changing coastal weather, children often need a light jacket or sweater even on warm days. It is important that such items be clearly marked with the student’s name.
  • We encourage you to car pool or park your car and walk into school.
  • Gum, candy and sodas should not be brought to school.
  • Dogs are not allowed on campus at any time including after school and weekends.
  • Students should not bring toys and games to school except with teacher permission. Students assume all liability for their possessions.
  • Student cell phones must be turned off and remain in backpacks at all times.
  • Use of profanity is against state law and will not be permitted on school grounds.
  • Behavior that is dangerous or threatening is forbidden. This includes fighting, pushing, tripping, throwing rocks, etc.
  • Dangerous items, or items used in a dangerous manner, will be confiscated and returned only to the student’s parents.
  • The Del Mar Union School District has a very strict illegal substance policy. Possession of illegal drugs and alcohol by minors is against the law.
  • Students are expected to show good sportsmanship, fair play, and courtesy at all times on campus. Students who constantly break rules or disrupt games will be removed from the game and put in a “time-out” situation.
  • The safety and well being of your student is very important to us. Help us protect them by informing the School Office and teachers of any changes in dismissal procedures, and updated phone numbers including new emergency numbers. Please send notes to the teacher and office if there are special situations of which we need to be aware.
  • Please notify the school office immediately if you have moved out of the District.

A Message Against Drugs
Possession of illegal drugs, alcohol, or tobacco by minors is against the law. If students have these substances at school, both parents and the police will be called. The Del Mar Union School District has strict rules regarding drug and alcohol use.

School Supplies and Materials
Del Mar Heights School furnishes textbooks and basic supplies free of charge. However, with recent state budget reductions, we appreciate parents supporting the school by purchasing some school supplies. A list of optional grade level supplies is posted on the website. Students are held responsible for lost, damaged, or vandalized books and materials. Assembly Bill 1421 allows the school to hold report cards and school records until compensation has been made for lost or damaged school materials.

Lunches and Milk

Milk is available for students for a nominal annual fee. Nutritious lunches are offered for a fee through the district's hot lunch program. Under state and federal regulations, students from low income families are eligible for free milk and a free lunch. Information is available in the School Office.
